Sorting irises after they bloom - tag idea

I have 5 or 6 unnamed irises that have reproduced quite well over the years but are jumbled together. I plan to sort them by color and redistribute them through my yard after they bloom. I had an idea for marking them to aid in this process; maybe this will help someone else.

Get some small rubber bands and some clear plastic index tabs, the sturdy type used for hanging file folders. The idea is to cut the tabs in half from top to bottom, then open each out and slip in the rubber band. Now close the tab either with tape or the self-adhesive strips that some tabs come supplied with. You now have a tag with a rubber band at the top.

Before the plants flower, run a tag down each stalk so that it's not obvious. When the flower blooms, write its color on the tag with a marker and leave it in place until everything's bloomed and identified. Then the colors are ready for sorting.

I also plan to take pictures for future reference using the same caption I used on the tags. Maureen
