I only have one iris from my grandmother's garden and I would like to identify it. It is probably pretty old. I would guess more than 50 years. It has very large blooms compared to the other iris that I grow. The blooms are approximately 8in tall and 6 in wide. Any guesses?
Let's try this again. You can find the images of the iris at the following link at the very bottom of the page. The last 2 images identified as 'Nanny's Iris'.
I'm sorry that I can't help you with the id of your Grandmother's iris, but I did notice that the iris you have marked as a siberian is actually a dutch iris. All of your photos are beautiful. I hope you'll share more and I hope someone can help with the id.
Thanks Brock. I'm not sure where I even got that iris, but I bought a number of different Siberian irises last year and put them in that flowerbed, so I assumed it was Siberian. Maybe one was mislabeled...but I am glad to know that it is a Dutch iris. Aesthetically I guess it doesn't matter, but it feels more orderly to know the names of things.
I think the neon color was caused by the flash. Next year try for pics during the day, with notes on any color discrepancies. Some iris are very hard to photograph.
The link below will take you to pictures of historic iris --- click a name on the left to see its photo.
Iris Girl, Yes, the magenta was definitely caused by the flash. Thanks for the link. It looks very similar to Amas(1885). I suspected that it was really old, 50 years was a conserative guess...so the date makes sense.
I also have an iris that smells like grapes that very well could be I.Pallida. Thanks a lot. Mystery isn't solved, but at least I have a name to investigate further.
