I have some that have been overtaken by shrubs, they continue to bloom just fine. I think the blooms on those last longer than the ones I have in full sun. That might be different from shade from trees though.

Reticulata is very short lived in many places. I've had some come back for years, but most of them are annuals. They are worth a try, and replanting them every fall is an option.
