newbie iris transplant predicament
I have always loved irises but have never had the right place to grow them. My current yard is northern exposure, shaded, and not well drained.
My husband and I recently purchased a lot for a new home (sunny yard and southern exposure - yay!). Bonus: when he went to mow the lot last weekend, he discovered a nice patch of what seems to be irises (no blooms yet, but the foliage definitely leads me to think it's irises).
My predicament is this: the builder will start digging the basement within the next couple weeks, and construction will likely finish in the fall after the first frost. It's a small lot, and there is nowhere to move them that will be safe from the construction equipment. I would love to save these plants, but I'm not sure what to do with them until next spring when I can plant again. They will likely not survive the transplant and soil in my current yard.
Can I transplant them and keep them in pots on my deck (the only sunny spot in my current yard)? If they will survive the summer in pots, then what do I do with them over the Michigan winter?
My last resort is to give them away to friends, but I would really love to keep them somehow. Hoping someone here can give me some advice!
