Which type of kitty litter? The crystals?

Actually I think they use the same mineral they make kitty litter out of in bio-dynamic farming methods, mainly due to the mulitude of trace minerals and calcium found in it.(NOT the crystels)

Thanks for the tip. I find perlite to be expensive. I'm also going to try it in the soil where I want to plant lavenders and rosemary. It seems that it might aerate the soil a bit.

I call kitty litter the poor man's water crystals. They are made of clay so they absorb a lot of water and then release it slower than the normal potting soil.

Can the kitty litter be used in growing mix for indoor and outdoor plants instead of perlite?

Hi, I'd just like to mention that KL is something discussed a lot in the bonsai forum, and it's not used because while it's great at first, it breaks down really fast in the soil and becomes mushy and compacted, so it does the opposite of drain quickly, which was the original point of using it. Instead, something that looks just like it (but is high-fired clay) is used, and the generic name is 'turface', but it's sold usually as Schultz Soil Conditioner, or sometimes as 'Profile' (at Canadian Tire in Canada).

I have also used turface and recommend it.
