Pruning to Tree Form, Yellow Leaf Drop?

I've been a lurker here and decided to come out of the closet. My question, after reading some threads re pruning - is it possible to train my Limelights into trees? I have two and one is doing great (second year - both are four feet), but the other lost almost all leaves by September 1 and they turned yellow first - maybe fungus? It gets far more sun so the blooms are not as big or beautiful as the other either. I thought I saw someone's post about pruning off old wood at the base to form an eventual tree, but seems to me you'd have to take off all but ONE central wood, correct? Any help is greatly appreciated.
