Good sleuthing! I think so. Ii would watch it for growth habit and bud count, etc. to be sure, but I think you're right. It looks very much like Persian Berry, which Gaulter hybridized and introduced at around the same time.

Thanks Renee, I did find one picture of Persian Berry that looks like it, but most of them do not.

Tell me what to look for as far as growth habit? Where do I find this info listed?

I do think it is Rose, not Persian Berry. But they are similar and by the same hybridizer.

Have you tried looking it up on the Iris Encyclopedia?

Ah!!! another tool! Thanks so much Renee, I didn't know about this one. I have just joined HIPS - they have a lot of good info. This research becomes very addictive, just got to find that name - I know that I've seen it!

A lot of the historic Iris that I'm looking for were my Grandmother's, a different group were my Mother's. Another three groups from other sources - plus I have a friend from my MG Class that has joined the search. She has a catalog from the mid-70's were her mother marked the ones she ordered. We have found a few of them in the overgrown, weedy mess. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has neglected messes.

I plan to make a new bed for some of these right away. Some are planted in too much shade and hardly ever bloom. Guess that's what happens over the years.

Penny, it sounds like a fun project. I rescued irises that were here in 1960 when my grandfather bought the place- by 1989, when I moved in, there was one dried up rhizome left under an oleander.
You will have a number of pleasant surprises next spring. Have you seen Carlos Ayenta's site, Brighton Park Irises? He's in HIPS, and he used to post here sometimes. Wonderful, wonderful site, with a great list of commercial growers.
