Won my First Leaf Contest!

Entered my local horticultural society's hosta leaf contest---and I won! That was a surprise. You needed to submit three leaves from the same hosta. Well that was hard. I wasn't going to remove three Goodness Gracious or three War Paint or three Sagae etc! Mine just aren't big enough, or I just didn't want to lose the nice shaping. So since I have a few June, that's what I submitted.

Thanks to Mary who posted in April and asked about hosta leaf contests. And thanks Don for providing the link regarding the AHS leaf contest criteria. So I picked the most uniform leaves; with very little insect markings; the longest petiole and added a simple vase. After cleaning with water, they were ready to go!

So let me say: if I can do it, you can do it too!

What was your prize? Or was it a ribbon? I wouldn't want to bald up my hosta either

How cool is that!?!? Thanks for reminding me about War Paint, I'm still on the hunt for that one! *read reminding me as enabling me* :)

    Congrats on the win!!!

Thanks Ken, Almosthooked and Kate! It's always nice to win!

Almosthooked, the prize is a small amount of money for me to use towards the annual plant sale that the society has each year. I don't think horticultural societies have much money these days. Many of them struggle to keep their members. So this works out just fine!

Kate, I am glad to enable! War Paint is a great hosta. Hope you like my picture!

War paint is one gorgeous hosta. How old is it? June is always a winner in my book, also. You chose lovely leafs to display. Congrats from me, too!!

Love the color of your June leaves. I prefer those soft shades of green and blue over the brighter gold centers that some Junes get when grown with more sun. Oh, and your vase is good looking too. Congrats!

Thank you all for the congrats. It means a lot more coming from other "hostaholics!"

Donna, this is the second year I have had this War Paint. I received it last year as a four eyed plant. This year it is 7 eyes. Looks like it is a good grower.

Hagar23, good luck with your contest in July. Sounds like your contest requires only one leaf? That may give you more to choose from.

Babka, I have been striving to get a June to have the yellow center, but I was not successful this year. Of course, since I have a shade garden, I want what I cannot have---a yellow June! But I do like the shaded June too.

Kate, good luck with finding War Paint!

    Congratulations on your first win!

I bought War Paint this year and am afraid it's not really War Paint, as it's plain green with no ripples. I know it does turn green, so I'm giving it a year. The nursery may be getting it back if it doesn't look more like WP next spring. Yours is gorgeous.

Thanks Madplanter! I must say that my War Paint does still have lighter coloring on a few of the leaves even at this point. I can understand why you are worried that yours might be Niagara Falls. Unfortunately, you will have to wait until spring to find out. That sucks!

    Congratulations, NHL!
Very nice simple and classy display.
I now have War Paint envy.

Madplanter , If your War Paint is a Niagara Falls they are both beautiful hosta. . I love my war Paint but covet Myrle(McTavish) Niagara Falls and hope someday mine will grow to be as large and gorgeous as her's is. My War Paint is turning more green now but still can see the hint of lighter in the leaf

My Niagara Falls is puny compared to McTavish but finally showing some progress this year

Gorgeous War Paint and gorgeous Niagara Falls Faye!

    Thanks for the congrats, mbug.

I like the way MadPlanter says "first win" -- it is onward and upward from here NHL! Way to GO!

I'd be hard put to share 3 leaves perfect ones off a single plant too. Glad you had enough Junes to choose the one to be left standing there defrocked.

I think my June has a yellow center. I'm not quite sure. It does look more like English Sunrise all the time, and Teatime has a nice almost gold margin to go with it. I have those three linked as my Three Graces. In fact, a blended portrait of the three is my Wallpaper since I took it.

How neat that you won with a June. The top ranking FAVORITE hosta of all.
