Hostas for a memory garden

My granddaughter was killed by a drunk driver a week ago and I need to do a memory spot in my gardens. Any suggestions would be most appreciated...she was only 20 years old. I am planning on Remember Me...I have one (for 3 years) and I love it and it does well for me. Thanks ahead of time,

Vicki

Vicki, it is so sad to lose a young person in the family. I have been through this and am very aware of how deeply it hurts. I am sorry that you must endure this loss and the sadness that goes with it.

I think Remember Me is a good start for a memory garden. If you feel okay about it, we can help you a little better if you can tell us just a little about her. Her name, her color of hair, her state and city. We can help find hostas that will fit. This is good because it gives us something to do to help you. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My sympathies go out to you and your family. How awful, and I am sorry. A memorial garden is a wonderful thing for you to do, it helps to ease some of the pain. I have one started for my two nephews who passed away at young ages. I started with a J. maple and a statue. I surrounded it with plants that start with the letters in their names. Any hosta you put in there that you like can become special just because you chose it in her honor.

My granddaughters name is Paige Elizabeth...she was born with blonde hair and maybe at times it was blonde. But being the free spirit she was, it was green, black or maybe even mauve/red too. She loved everyone she came in contact with and had just passed her state boards for nursing assistant and on her way to going into nursing. Over 800 young people, friends and family gathered to say good-bye to her at her memorial service.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Vicki. By your description, she was a wonderful person!

There is a hosta named Elizabeth and another named Grandchild. They are listed in the Hosta Library but I don't know how hard they might be to find.

I would go through the library and see what strikes your fancy. There might be some that hit you by their looks or others whose name means something to you.

Best to you from one grandmother to another.

What a special way to remember your granddaughter! I know it will help you through a most difficult
time of grieving to plan this special garden in her honor!

I agree with chris-e, go through the Hosta Library list and you'll no doubt find names of hosta that
will be just right for your garden, and hopefully easily acquired!!

I am so sorry for your loss--my heart and prayers go out for you!

So very sorry to hear about your grand daughter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
If she liked rock and roll type of music there are many choices. I love metallica and that sort of name.
There are many hostas with a religious connotation with names like blue angel and all the sports, ie, guardian angel. I also have the following hostas in my religious theme bed: glory, american halo, blue vision, eternity, sunshine glory, holy mole, praying hands, awakening angel, paradise glory, noah's rainbow, saint paul, paul's glory, inspire greatness, stained glass, cathedral windows, and unforgettable.

I'm so sorry, Vicki. The loss of a child or grandchild is too hard to bear. When I read your note, I immediately thought of an old one, So Sweet, and a newer one, Guardian Angel which was mentioned earlier. Would it help if we sent you plants? I'd be honored to send So Sweet. Nance

I am so so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to understand when a young life is taken so tragically. I think that your idea for the memory garden is wonderful - what a terrific way to honor her, and to help in the healing process.

I think that remember me is a great idea, I also have one called So Sweet - not sure if that would be a good one or not. Also, isn't there one called Guardian Angel?

    Dear "hosta friends"
I am humbled and over-whelmed by all of your very kind words and support...also plant suggestions. The one thing that I have already learned from this horrific tragedy is that the kind and sympathetic words of love, support and encouragement come from peoples heart and those words do mean the world to those of us receiving them...so keep it up, never stop caring for all of our fellow travelers here on earth...it makes us all better for it.
    Thank you,
    Vicki

I'm so very sorry for your loss, Vicki. I can't imagine losing someone so young. I may have a seedling for you in a week or so when the weahter cools down. I'll email for your address then to see if you want it to name for her.
