Corona Bean in MidAtlantic Zone7+

Hello all,

I tried to search this topic with conflicting results. I want to grow a white "pole" bean called Corona (Spagna Bianco). I can't figure out if this bean is a runner bean. Some websites list it as a runner and the Seeds of Italy folks just call it a pole bean.

Now for the questions:

1. If it is indeed a runner -- should I start the seeds inside now (Central Virginia)??

2. How heavily to mulch in fall to prevent frost from killing the roots?

2. Start indoors at most 2 weeks before you can plant them outdoors.

The cotyledons of Runner beans stay in the ground and the sprout grows upward. This compares to most other beans where the cotyledons grow up out of the ground and become leaflets to support early plant growth. You have to be careful to avoid letting a runner bean get too large in a pot before you set it out. They grow fast so about 14 to 18 days is the max they can be held indoors.

Can I lift the roots and plant again next season OR might they survive with heavy mulch??

I have received my Corona seeds (Gourmet Seeds) and will plant them indoors tomorrow to set out about 4/15. Thanks for the tip :-))
