My First Irises

Usually I only grow vegetables, but today someone offered me some irises. There are purple irises, yellow irises, and unknown irises. They have just finished blooming and the leaves are still green. I was also given a small peony bush still in the process of blooming.

Got them home and into the soil before sunset and watered them. I may have planted them too deep. In their original bed, the rhizomes were on the surface or just below it, but I had to plant them deeper to get them to stand up, at least until roots establish to hold in place.

My thought was to leave them heeled in like that till the leaves die back, then dig them up again and store the roots in the fridge or basement till I have a proper flower bed made for them. Same for the peony. Right now they are on the edge of the pumpkin patch in full sun.

Did I do this right?
