termites?!?!?!

OK so I am out in the garden pulling weeds, and I decided top pull off a few dead leaves and old stalks. As I am working, I pull a stock and boom, there are 3 or more termites that are in it, near the base and they run underground.. I was like what?!?!?

So I read and find out that when it's really hot and there is not alot of water, (as it is now in TX) termites will get in the stalks of flowers for water. It says to throw away any affected to discourage the termites, but I am curious...

Of course I really don't want to toss my babies, but if I have to do that I will. My real question is does anyone know of any way to discourage termites in a flower bed?

I know to discourage ants, you can use orange peels, and for cats it's lemon peels, but anything natural for termites anyone? ANY suggestions are welcome! I find it hard to believe there is nothing on the organic end for termites!
