Looks like insect to me. Seen any grasshoppers?

No, I haven't seen any insects. I keep looking and have checked the undersides of the leaves as well but I haven't spotted anything. -kc

If you are organic and don't want to hear about spraying with pesticides, but just want to know what is eating your plants, you could check at a hardware or gardening store for sticky traps. Last year Menards sold sticky cards with eugenol as an attractant. You could mount these near the plants and get a sample of your insect population.

Could be snails/slugs. You might want to take a look at night with a flashlight.

If so, treat with Sluggo or similar.

I agree with Rick. Big chunks eaten out of leaf edges are likely the work of slugs It's difficult to know for sure without finding the culprit.. Sluggo or hand picking are solutions to that.

KCL, does your part of Texas have much problem with slugs or snails?

I'm not sure if we have problems with slugs or snails. I'm a new gardener so I have no experience. I haven't seen any but maybe they are a lot small than I'm expecting them to be.

We're going out of town for the Easter holiday but I'm going to try to get the sticky traps tomorrow and put them out before we leave. If I catch anything I'll be sure to post. thanks! -kc

Could also be leaf cutter wasps. They got to my garden one spring but just took bites, nothing killed. I think they are overall part of the good guys so don't try to kill them if that's what they are.
