Hmm, anyone have an idea what pesticide to use? I can't seem to find anything online.

I am pretty certain that this is a kudzu bug (Megacopta cribraria, also called the Bean Plataspid, Kudzu Bug, Globular Stink Bug or Lablab Bug) - they are an import - ostensibly to eat kudzu in the southeast because kudzu has no natural predators. However, kudzu bugs seem to like soybeans and other green beans much better than kudzu.

Hand-picking them isn't too difficult, put the jar of soapy water under the vine they're sucking on and tap from above. Their natural behavior makes them drop - right into your water. It's easiest to do this early in the morning if possible. After a week or so, it's clearly helping reduce the population here. I'm organic for the most part, but Neem Oil does seem to help some. It doesn't immediately kill them, but they seem to stop eating and they leave the sprayed beans alone for few days. Hope this helps!

Warning - I think it was Walter Reeves posted a short article that the substance that makes these bugs smell bad (I haven't noticed it myself) if squirted onto your face or worse near your eyes - can burn. I make sure to wear my glasses when picking bugs or beans overhead.

How do you know it's a pest? I didn't see where it had eaten any of your plant. Lol

I came home to them yesterday. When I pulled in the driveway my green beans had so many on them that they looked black from a distance!

They were almost completely covered with them and they did a lot of damage. I sprayed with liquid seven after sunset, something I rarely use, only in emergency's. When I get home I'll check and give an update.

I'm home and no sign of the kudzu bugs, except dead ones. Liquid seven works on them. I just hope I didn't kill too many good bugs!

When are we going to learn!
We imported the Kudzu & found it was a bad ideal.
So we import the bug & it is another bad Ideal.
Like the African honey bee beetle, that got away & will kill your bees, like we did not have enough problems with bees.

Thanks for letting us know about the Sevin. Every day we pick off more. They're doing quite a number on the romanos and now starting on the rattlesnake beans. I hate using sevin, but... I tried some Captain Jack (spinosad) and didn't see any effect. I'm going to try that again in hopes that it's not so toxic. :(
