Try to shelter it from hot afternoon sun with a piece of cardboard or other obstruction. The plant may need a few days in "shade" to adust to the changing light environements.

Also, do water the plant well. I recommend watering for a long time to make sure the water drains all the way down to the bulb. Especially the first few days, watering deeply will be needed.

How deep did you plant ? sometimes replanting too deep can make the stem die back. Did you plant the potted soil surface even or slightly above your existing soil ? (you should).

Even if the stem dies back this year, don't fret.. the bulb will survive (provided you have watered deeply enough to settle soil around the roots) and will bloom next year.

You will probably have lots of babies next year which you can trade with me (I will send you several different bulblets in return which will give you a patch of different lilies instead of just one).

This is my first time trying lilies too. I bought the bulbs about a month ago, and planted them right away. (These are orientals) So far, nothing at all is coming up. I am wondering, are they slow to emerge, or did I do something wrong? I planted them deep, about 6", as my garden book suggested. I planted 4 of them, and not one is poking through yet.

Orientals tend to flower later in the season in the northern areas, ie., mid - late summer, so you have some time. Yours may actually bloom a little later too because they were newly planted. After this year, they will be more on schedule.

Don't worry.. it can take 6-10 weeks for new lilies to emerge. The first year will not be representative of normal years.

I planted oriental lilies in the middle of summer last year and they never emerged. Then this year, they came up. It depends a bit on the soil temperatures, and the cycle of the bulbs (when they were harvested, how they were stored, etc). Don't worry.
