Cool white are better for vegetation but I suspect the reason the nursery uses them is because they make to plants look better.

I think plants maintain well with cool white light. I use cool white on my cloning setup, in my seed starting cabinet and as maintenance for my clone mothers that I usually try to keep alive for more than a year. Everything else is just too much and burns the leaves. The plants do show slow groth under moderate lighting.

I use the spiral forescents that are 46 watts and equivalant to a 200 watt incandescent bulb. Globe is the mark I prefer because they are gauranteed for 7 years. They are available at Walmart and if you keep your sales slip they can just be exchanged at the service desk if they fail.
