Here's a description from the Seed Savers Exchange 2008 Winter Yearbook:

"Never grew a more productive bean. Has a string like old-time beans, exquisite flavor, must pick daily in the heat of the growing season, seed susceptible to virus."

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds says it's an Ozark Heirloom and, being in MO, mentions that it is grown by a local family. They also say it has short vines. Blue Lake is a tall vine. So, if this one is short, I'd guess it won't be as tall!

My guess is that this bean will be more "beany" than Blue Lake. Our favorite bean is probably similar, being a cutshort. I like to pick the pods when the seeds are bulging and the strings are heavy and easy to remove.

I like the description you read from Seed Saver's Exchange about the flavor. I only bought a small packet of seed (57 seeds), but if they mainly all germinate, we might have a nice stand and we think late in the season beans have a slightly nicer flavor.

Very interested in trying out this in North Texas. Most season's my pole bean success is less but someone suggested this to get a good yield in my zone. Would anyone have seeds for this to trade? thanks!

I looked around and didn't find anyone offering this one, presently. If you can believe it, someone had offered it on Amazon. You could keep checking for Baker Creek or the Seed Savers Exchange to offer it again.

Also, we grow Tennessee Cutshort, which is fairly heat tolerant. (Does well for us in Oklahoma). I know that Sandhill Preservation Center has Tennessee Cutshort.

Another very good bean for hotter climates, though not a stringed (tenderpodded) bean, is Rattlesnake.
