For a single large plant in a studio apartment I would get either a floor or desk light therapy lamp or task lamp. You've probably seen them advertised on tv or in newspapers. It would double as a task lamp for you if you needed to do some detail work.

I think they generally run between $100 and $200.

Some pretty typical ones are at www.bluemaxlighting.com I didn't buy the lamp I use on my own jade tree and indoor indeterminate tomatoes there, but they look decent. For a plant I couldn't care less about the "dimmable" feature they're touting, which requires a special ballast, so unless you are hard over about having a dimmable lamp you might want to see if a lamp with similar specs but a standard ballast is less expensive. Mine is NOT dimmable.

Does your apartment get ANY natural light? What options do you have for windows? My jade tree sits right in front of a floor-to-ceiling south-facing window plus gets the supplemental light 16 hours a day during winter.
