Looks like it maybe an oriental. Possible Stargazer...a lovely, very common variety.
How much of the foliage did you chop off? Lilies need the foliage to feed the bulbs for next year. If you chopped less than 1/3-1/2, let the remaining foliage that is there mature and then dig the bulb once the foliage has browned to the ground.

Thank you Flora, unforunately I broke the stem more than half way down. The lily was making it's way above two well-grown in shrubs. Most all the foliage is gone.
The lily opened quite a bit through the course of today. Here's a pic I just took.

It is an Oriental lily, there are quite a few that look very similar to 'Stargazer' though they are the most common.

Looks like Oriental Mona Lisa to me. Too much white for Stargazer. MN is a very common variety too.
