Planted Too Late?

I had some casa blanca lilies bought at the end of June that I only got planted today - 7/22. They were well sprouted, with stems about 4 inches long and some feathered leaves at the top. I know - mea culpa. I just read that I probably should have just tossed them on the compost. Should I not count on them and plant something else in their spot?
