rescuing rhizomes

I inherited hundreds of iris varieties from the previous owner of my house. I moved nearly every one seven years ago. This year, they needed moved again, mainly due to an unmanageable weed situation.

Problem: When I should have moved them - ground was hard as a rock due to drought. So - it finally started raining and we had an Indian Summer - so I dug them out before Thanksgiving.

Now I have a 50 lb. paper bird seed bag full of rhizomes in my basement mudroom that doesn't freeze.

I'm afraid they will dry out - should I put potting mix in with them? Sawdust? There's no way I can pot them all...

Flower bed where they will be put back:

We tilled it once. Plan to till again in Spring and altho I hate to I need to put down some herbicide to prevent the fescue, crabgrass, orchard grass, henbit, chickweed, etc. from choking everything. Will Preen be adequate?

Sorry this is so long....
