Find That Iris!

Greetings,

For those of you who don't know, I operate the website Brighton Park Iris. More than half of my section is really a tribute to Schreiner's and the many introductions they have produced throughout the decades.

Within the past three months or so, I have received questions in my e-mail such as: Where can I find Iris-X? or...Is Iris-X available or extinct? It took me awhile, to find answers, but I found them nonetheless.

Where is this all getting to? Well, I've posted a list "find it" list on my website. If you're looking for any Schreiner intro from 1936 to 1999, provided it's still available, it's listed along with any grower that may sell them.

Of the 811 known Schreiner introductions (including 2000s), 556 introduction from (1936-1999) are still available.

I tried to include every major grower when compiling this list, currently there are the following growers: Angel Iris Farm, Argyle Acres, Blue Cloud Iris, Blue J Iris, Bluebird Haven Iris Garden, Dowis Ranch, Forte's Iris Gardens, Hidden Acres Iris Gardens, Hornbaker Gardens, Iris4U Iris Garden, Iris City Gardens, Lakeside Iris, Leota's Iris Garden, Malevil Iris Gardens, Mid-America Iris Garden, Napa Country Iris Garden, Riverview Iris Gardens, Schreiner's Iris Gardens, Snowpeak Iris and Daylilies, Spruce Corner, Stoney Creek Iris, Superstition Iris Gardens, The Iris Farm, Willow Bend Iris Farm.

Please let me know what you think.

Sincerely,

Carlos

    Hi Carlos:
That's really nice. I am sure it will be helpful to people looking for something in particular.
Why don't you also put a list of the 'not availables' up, that way if someone knows a source, they can let you know.

That was a labor of love! Thank you.

Kudos!! What a wonderful resource for historic iris lovers (and others...) - a great resource, and a welcome addition to your webpage. Now if we could get other irisarians who specialze in other clasic hybridizers to do the same - imagine the possibilities for preservaton!

Thanks for the comments everyone. Laetitia, I included your suggestion about including introductions that are currently not obtainable through any of the listed iris growers.

Carlos, this is a monumental task. Thanks for doing it.

I am not trying to be picky, but should those Schreiner registrations introduced by Wayside, Jackson & Perkins, and perhaps Roris, be called Schreiner introductions? They are Schreiner registrations but not Schreiner introductions.

Several years ago PIXIE DUST appeared in one of the smaller catalogs and it was labeled Schreiner's. I then went to the Schreiner catalogs to look for a picture and pulled my hair out because I couldn't find it in any Schreiner catalog. I thought it was a mistake. I later found out they hybridized and registered it, but they did not introduce it. It was introduced by Jackson & Perkins, a catalog I didn't have.

I don't think there are too many of these and a asterisk (*) might be in order to indicate that Schreiner iris was not introduced by Schreiners. Down the road it might save somebody some frustration should they be seeking one of these 'oddballs.'

    Hey Walter,

That's a good point. There are several introductions that were hybridized by Schreiner's but not introduced by them. I should probably retitle it as Schreiner creations or something along those lines. There were a few of those in the late 1960s but those weren't really introduced to the public and a couple in the 80s and 90s, but I'll put that distinction in future updates. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Sincerely,
    Carlos

    Hi Carlos:
Thanks for including all the cultivars, even those that are no longer available. Have the people at Schreiners noticed or said something about how nice a site you have? I wonder if they still grow some of those non available ones, as I know they grow alot more than their catalog lists.

What a great resource. Thanks for posting this.

In response to njiris's comment about Schreiner's. You can call them and ask for ones that they don't have listed in their catalog. I wanted Rio Salsa, which wasn't listed, but when I called they said they had it and I was able to get it (and with the 50% discount for ordering over $80 worth of irises at one time). I'm so happy I was able to get that one.

Laetitia, in the past I had a question about a particular cultivar and along with the question sent them a link to the website. They wrote back and seemed to enjoy the website.

To reinterate what Rootedinreadyville stated before, Schreiner's does sell many varities not listed on their catalog. I was able to get a few historics/close to historics from them, but many of them are simply not available from them any more. The newer the introduction, the more likely it is they have it stock even though it may not be listed in their catalog.

I was a able to find a few more sources that had unique historics not attainable through the current list of iris growers, so I was happy about that. I will get to updating the list soon.

    Hey Carlos:
Too bad Schreiners doesn't keep at least a token cultivar of each they have intro'd. I know I would, if I were a grower. I find that so frustrating, that some really gorgeous ones, Schreiners or others, are no longer available. And Rootedinreadyville, that is a great suggestion, to ask them if they happen to have one of their iris tht is not listed. Better chance you will get the right thing, if it is from the introducer.
Carlos, let us know when you have updated your website with any new information. Geez, its only early Winter, and I am suffering from lack of new iris information.

Laetita are you sure of that? Schreiners would have to grow 811 cultivers of which they would only sell very few of 70%.That means they can grow about 550 they might sell. I believe the Schreiners all love iris but it is still a money thing.

Carlos I give you a hand on a job well done!!!!

With all the problems with Riverview they still deserve a hand for providing a source for a lot of older cultivers. I have never had any problems with them.

I agree with Laetita. 811 cultivers does not seem like that many to have growing. If I had ever registered and introduced an iris you better believe that it would be growing as long as I lived. Most of us on this board if we have the space are growing that many or more. I would not be surprised to find that Schreiners has most of these still growing. They may have lost some because of conditions beyond their control. Lee Mincy

I have been introducing irises since 1977 and no longer grow many of the earlier ones. Form, substance, color have all been greatly improved over the years and continue to improve. I would rather give space to the newer, more exciting things that are showing up iris patches everywhere. A plain yellow self like Ola Kala or Zantha just doesn't excite me anymore, but I do not condemn those who admire the aforementioned. To each his own.

I would like to see someone hybridize 'spider' irises. Retain the narrow form, but make the falls flare and the standards remain upright and not flop open.

Some I hybridized in Texas did not perform well in MS and I got tired of struggling with them to keep them alive, so I let them go.

Once I get my acreage (in a few years) I plan to do alot of hybridizing: old ones with new.
I like the graceful falls of the oldies and some of the wonderful blended colors of the old ones too. I can't wait! But I just don't have the space now.

Laetitia, If you lived close to me I have an extra 5 acres you could use as long as you wanted. I love to watch other peoples iris labors. Of course I would want to walk over on a regular basis and see how your iris were growing. Lee Mincy

I've updated the page with a few more iris growers. If anyone can find a source for the currently "sourceless" varieties, please drop me a line at brightonparkiris@yahoo.com or brightonparkiris@hotmail.com
