Let's see, I reckon I can start several hundred Lithops in a half tray, say 200 to be conservative. Say twenty half trays under your lights? What's that, 4,000 seedlings!

I'm guessing you'll want to space tomatoes out a little more ;)

It is a matter of space, not light. Is that what you are asking?

IÂm sorry, my question was confusing. What I need to know is how many plants can you grow under the shop light. I am guessing as many that will fit. For example four rows of sixteen 3-inch containers side to side would fit under a 4-ft light with a 12-½ reflector. If two lights were set up side to side then you should be able to grow 128 seedlings. They will be under the lights until theyÂre big enough to be planted outside. This should take around 8 weeks. As I said earlier the bulbs would be the cool 40-watt tubes.

Perhaps my question deserves "duh".

Yup, as many as will fit. Tomatoes might be a bit too tall after 8 weeks to do well under fluorescents, so they might stretch. Don't start them too early or you'll have really gangly foot-tall plants that fall over when you plant them out.
