Depth of water

Does it matter how much of the stems are covered in water? I just replanted one in water with pebbles, but I'm wondering if the stem is covered too much with the pebbles and water. It holds in place better the higher up you secure it with pebbles, but I'll move it if it will harm the plant- stem rot? Any thoughts?

It does matter. It is not a problem. If you raise the water above another node, it will grow more roots.
I have had one in just water for years. It sent out a new shoot below the water line. The new shoot grew totally under water for several inches before it reached the surface.
I had it in a drinking glass when I first bought it, then moved it to a tall vase.
