Hi, I don't visit this forum often.

I have my Japanese Maples in pots. So far they have done really well, and I truly love them because they are at my entrance and they are so beautiful. I love stepping outside my front door just to look at them, and I love coming home to have them greet me.

I've had them two years now and I definitely need to repot them. We had strong winds a few nights ago and one tipped over! When I awoke the next morning to discover what had happened, I knew definitely that it was time to repot because it is so top heavy now with this seasons' new growth.

Our temps are dropping below freezing tonight and I just put them into the garage.

I believe your maples will do lovely in pots. Email me to let me know how they're doing once you pot them. I know you already know this, but don't forget to "NOT" fertilize them.

Thanks, I guess I should clarify a bit more.. I was more wondering how they do in pots indoors when I have to bring them in during the burning summer. I lost most of my JM's during the summer last year so was wondering if I put them in pots instead of the ground could I bring them indoors for a few months and they do ok.

Won't do well indoors.

Instead of moving them indoors during the heat, either move them into a shadier site or rig temporary shade. Also be certain to keep up with adequate water.

Kevip, Not sure what part of the country you're in, but I'm in Dallas and I've had a lot of luck with JM's in pots. They do need morning sun and high shade. Late afternoon sun can hurt them, but I keep all of mine outside. One trick. JM's need lots of good drainage. Make sure that you're planting them in a course mix (Calloways Planter Mix or 1/4 shale) to allow for quick and easy drainage. Thick clumpy cheap potting soil will cause the roots to rot. Living in Dallas, I've learned that the most successful potted plants require perfect soil and the rest just follows. Good luck.
