No, there are no bean ( P. vulgaris) on the market. State is an older cultivar. Like most of the older string beans needs to be harvested early. Selection is agood way to get improvement in any cultivar. Be aware tho, that it takes time. Burpee took 13 generations to get the Delicious tomato from the old Red Ponderosa. You may want to evaluate a newer introduction like Volunteer.

Thanks for the reply. The beans I calling tuff hull, one can see that there is a genic differnce. Instead of a round easy to snap bean, they are almost flat and when you try to snap the bean most will bend before it will snap. So I guess what I trying to confirm or not is, if seed from the round type is safed will it produce round or is it likely to produce either?
Thanks so much, just got a catalog with Volunteer in it will be trying them. Have tryed most others, like the drought resistents of the state.

You might also consider the NT (non-tough) Half-Runner carried by the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center. I haven't tried it. But I hear it's quite good.

Melon man it may take a few years to rogue out the beans you don't want, but it is doable. State does tend to be the most flat ( semi flat) of the half runners and does get tough quicker than most. The old Mountain half runner is my favorite for eating. Stringy tho.

Several years back went to Southern States and bought seed of their three types which included Mountian half runner, it was a dry season and the states seemed to out produce the other types. Haven't grown them since but feel like I need to go back and grow some. Have became diabetic and found that can control with the glycemic diet, beans are a must!!!! Just because they taste so good. Like mine 3/4 full or more, as long as pod is still green and growing. Most always have to string my states, ya can't eat the one I'm talking about, unless there shelled. Thanks, have several directions I wish to try now.
