Mulch

What kind of much should I use with Oriental lilies in zone 5? I ordered a few from BD Lilies this year and they just arrived. I know I need to mulch after the first frost (we've already had) but before the ground freezes (won't happen for a few more weeks).

The pamphlet says to use well-rotted manure, decomposed leaves or compost, which I have none of. Can I buy a bail of hay/staw and use that?
