When you post the first time a slot comes up underneath the message box for you to put your link in. Maybe try that. Cutting and pasting typed out links posted here didn't work very well for me, so I quit trying it.

If the tree is too big now it should not be messed with much. Low forking is common with Japanese maples grown in the open.

Thanks! I am going to try to post it with the URL, so here it goes.

Thanks for your suggestions about the tree. Let me know if you have any more thoughts.

Here is a link that might be useful: Japanese maple

Not seeing how to enlarge photos, but looks too advanced in age for major pruning.

Ron, click on the pictures and they will enlarge.

I have never seen a Japanese Maple with so many narrow crotches. It should have been pruned correctly in the nursery years ago.
In my garden it would be pruned with a shovel. Sorry

Second picture, upper right is the only cut I'd make. Without more pics its tought to tell where and exactly which branch to cut but that is really the only "troublesome" branch you can cut at this point.

I think I got it...3rd pic...the two branches creating the fork (with the included bark) cut the one to the right...that looks to be the one causing the crossing/rubbing branch.

Crotch angle smotch angle. Its a japanese maple not a huge white ash which has to overhang your bedroom while holding up tons of wood and snow for 50 years.

In your opinion the tree has too many of its leaves up near the top? Is there an issue with shade?

Do the pruning like whaas said. Remove no more than 1/4 of the branches in any year.
