Can anyone id this, just from the bark? Perhaps? =) The landscaper "thought" it was an amur maple, but wasn't sure. Thanks!

The bark of Amur maple does not usually display such a reddish cast - it is more of a drabber grayish-brown.

There are a number of varieties of maple that do have a very red tone to their bark, the Coral Bark Japanese maple is one, but there are others. To confirm a correct ID, we'd need to see the tree in leaf or at least a description of the what the leaves look like.

If I had to hazard a guess based just on the bark - and this is totally a guess - I'd say it was one of the red barked Japanese maples like the Coral Bark (Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku').

Is the reddish coloration on all sides of the tree or just on the side recieving the most sun??
