Emperor One with dead ends

I have 6 foot Emperor One japanese maple and I've noticed a lot of dead wood and dead ends on the tree. I would say about 30% seems to be dead. I cut a few off and they were completely dead (no green). Is this normal? Should I cut off the dead stuff now? Thanks.

If its dead, it won't get any deader! Yes,take off the dead stuff. You should evaluate why your tree recieved so much winter damage. Is the exposure too sunny? Did you have unusually harsh temperatures this winter? Did the tree recieve enough moisture? Or is the tree diseased or under attack from insects? Even though its common for some minor winter twig die-back in JMs, 30% is way over the norm.
