Karma and Hosta

I am a big believer in karma and banking it for future use.

I was very karma-conscious yesterday. I bought my friend a h. Journey's End in recognition of her daughter's (thank heaven) high school graduation. (I have only just introduced her to hosta and loaned her my Zilis.) Then when we attended graduation, I let 4 or 5 people cut into line as we were escaping into traffic.

While I was hunting for the Journey's End, I stumbled onto a plant labeled as Blue Angel but clearly not...no longer in a stock nursery pot, it had been placed in a massive plastic (fake terra cotta) decorative patio pot. 5 or 6 eyes. I'm staring in disbelief. It's a Guardian Angel (which I have never seen in a nursery here in VA, save the single lonely one I found last year) that must have sported from one of the nursery's BA's and been culled and replanted, I'm guessing to maintain the integrity of the BA from which it sprang. (Right now there is not a single BA to be found in that nursery and the lady I talked to had no idea about GA, but she looked and said no way was that a BA!) It was marked at 29.99 (because of the pot) so I hesitated (over my hosta budget anyway)...and I was in a hurry and my back is out so I talked myself into thinking that my own GA (labeled as such but already totally blue by the time I bought it last year) was good fortune enough for one person.

Then I got to thinking a little more and decided that maybe this was my opportunity to give a few of my friends their own GA (most of them knowing full well that I don't share!). So I drove back this morning, had another look, and talked myself into it.

Mind you, GA was the first hosta I HAD to have. And I was lucky enough to have the GA that didn't look like a GA come up in full glory this year - and it's still holding the pattern.

I did leave another one behind...one tiny eye planted in the same size planter and not looking at all like GA...so someone else can have a find like the one I had last year. More karma, sorta.

So maybe next year Five O'Clock Somewhere will be a little more in my price range (hope that isn't tempting the karma-keepers!).

Had to respond because I also believe that what goes around comes around and you have reminded me of that and made me decide on something that I has been tearing at my mind.

While I do tend to be very generous with sharing my plants, I can also be very selfish, there are just some that I refuse to share.

The neighbor on one side of me moved in just a few months before me, over 20 years now and has always been a wonderful neighbor, his kids grew up on my property and now bring their kids over. A long time ago, his wife left him and the kids, her lose, he raised those kids wonderfully and now has a new love interest in his life that moved in a few years back. She is a nice lady and as I learned more, I have found out that she is not well, is on a heart transplant list. She loves flowers and such and has always has an open invitation to wander my gardens, which she does. I try to keep her in cut flowers for her house, iris being her fav, but she loves all flowers and fights with Tom, the house owner about mowing what escapes my yard into his, lol.

Yesterday she came for a visit and her and I were sitting in the shade, she can't do much more than sit, and she was telling me how she wished she had more energy to do some landscaping and I asked her if she would feel offended if I should happen to find the time to put some of my excess plants along her house. She told me she would be thrilled, she just wasn't able to do it herself although she did feel she would be able to keep them watered.

I told her they would most likely be the common hostas that I have a ton of like the ventricosa or undulatas and she was just as thrilled with those. But today as I was wondering my gardens, I was looking at the two Guardian Angels I have and thinking that is something she should have next to her house because she really needed a Guardian Angel. But the other side of me remembers what I paid for the flippen things when they were new releases.

Now I know from your post that I do need to dig up one of my Guardian Angels and plant it for her. You made me remember the good old, 'What Goes Around, Comes Around', and there are times in your life where you can NOT be selfish.

Thinking back, and with this being a Karma post, I think this was meant to be. I almost lost my Guardian Angel to crown rot, was a uphill battle to save it and from the tiny remains of that ravished plant, I was later able to divide it into two nice growing clumps. Now I think that save was meant to be and one of them needs to go to Marilyn. Funny how you can look back on things and tie them into todays events.

Thanks for making up my mind and reminding me of what is really important. Must be Karma that I read this post, lol.

    Choc,

On the other hand...my karma deposit may not have cleared into my account yet. After warning everyone to be careful on the newly sealed slate patio, especially when wet, I found myself on my keister falling down the steps. No serious damage, a little elbow blood and some scrapes on the back of my leg but one of the kids saw me go and alerted the other two so then I had an audience!

I'm glad you can give a GA to the neighbor. My original one stands in homage to my girlfriend who passed 6 years ago and about whom I think daily, and who I know beyond a doubt takes care of me and mine. I think we all can use a little help from a guardian angel now and again.

When I was buying Journey's End for my friend, I explained to the clerk, "I buy hosta like I buy wine. If I like the label or the way it looks, or what it's called, ring me up!"

If this is true, then Lora has a big whopping dose of good Karma coming her way for giving away ALL her hostas to four other hosta homes and asking nothing in return. It had to be difficult for her, but she wanted to get them out of harm's way. If Karma really works (and I have no doubt that it does) then perhaps her nasty neighbor will be caught in her poisonous deceptions and Lora can grow her lovelies again in peace.

Choc, you sent me some 'Sunshine Glory' at a time when I really, really needed some sunshine in my life. Your karma account's in pretty good shape as far as I can tell. :)
