Attended the compost/mulch session at Behnkes today

Dr Gouin said to stay away for horse manure that has hardwood sawdust and also from hardwood mulch because when they breackdown manganese leaches out into the soil and causes manganese toxicity. the only remedy is to replace the contaminated soil with new.

as for red mulch, all it is is ground up pallets dyed red, and no telling what the composition of the pallets was

if hardwood, same problem as above

Thanks for the info. I use Fine Pines. Is that okay? I have always steered away from those dyed mulches. What did he/she say to use?

Does that mean that the Black Gold from the barn across the road from SSFS is no longer such a good idea? I'd been planning to go get several carloads ths spring to topdress my beds...

Yes, Lynn, that's correct. The horse manure from the barn across the road from SSFS is pure poison. Do not use it under any circumstances. Only a CCW-licensed, IALBTC-certified Horse Manure Detoxification Facility can deal with it properly. (I happen to operate one.)
