Is my tree dead?

I have two Bloodgood Japanese Maples in my front yard. I planted them last April 20th and they were nice and red at the time. Now it's April 4th and there's not even one leaf budded out. There are really no sure signs of leaves to be. How can I tell if the trees are dead? They seem flexible and alive. When I scratch the bark, it's green underneath. I at a loss, do I just wait it out or do I take them back to Wal-Mart? ( I know, I should have bought at a nursery!) I have until the 20th to decide. Input?
