Hi, all! It's been awhile, but a few of you may remember me. I was the one who brought half-a-dozen or so plastic 50 gallon barrels to the spring swap last time we were in a severe drought. (Unfortunately I won't have the opportunity to get more before this swap.) I'm in a new, smaller place now, and have gradually been transforming bare yard into gardens. I had to leave a few things behind that I'm really coming to miss. Maybe someone here can help fill in the holes.

I'm a MAG swap newbie, and I have my first truly permanent garden ever (I've moved 15 times in the last 10 years and every time the backseat is reserved for plants). Needless to say I've been dreaming of this spring.

I would be interested in hardy herbs, "cottage-y" perennials (like daisies, echinacea, iris, rudbeckia), and small, creeping container-friendly things (like lobelia and alyssum). My particular favorites are nigella, columbine, and plants that "look like things" (eyeball, candy corn). I would also be interested in leaves or cuttings from unusual succulents.

OK, I guess there's no such thing as a limited "want" list. Does anyone have a hellebore to spare? Seedlings welcome!

Someone was asking on the 'have' thread about leftover/unwanted plants - I don't think there's much danger of plants getting left, but if there are any unwanted plants left, I'd be happy to take any that would be safe/happy at my childrens' school, they did a big green-up this past weekend and could use some more plants.

Does anyone have any unwanted rocks/fieldstones? I'd be happy to come collect them if you do. I'm looking for something that is fairly low (or can be sunk into the ground a bit) so I can make path edgings but still be able to mow over them.

kilngod, if giverny is offering them this year, ask her for mayapples. The ones she gave me last year are doing fine under a very large, very thirsty maple. Also wild ginger might do OK. If no one is offering it this year, let me know, and I'll dig you some of mine.

Tina, I can sympathize with your Maple tree desperation. I have a very large silver maple that I'm doing battle with. It has a high canopy, so it is sunny and very, very, dry under there. What I've found is that xeric perennials do very well under those circumstances. The Agastache that I have to be careful with under other conditions is going nuts and multiplying like mad. Sedums really like it there. On the shadier part, I have Lamium established, and they're doing very, very well. I bet that epimedium and some Hellebores will probably be okay there as well. Just some extra ideas for you.

None of my cannas came back. The mice made nests of them in the garage and chomped on the bulb things. I was hoping.

Does anyone have any red cannas with burgundy foliage? I love Red Futurity and will probably buy some if no one has any to trade. I figured it doesn't hurt to ask.

I've also lost a Huechera (or heucherella) 'Ebony and Ivory.' I'd love to trade something for some of that. It's a perfect little plant. The voles thought so, too.

I'm building wire mesh cages for everything this year. Screw this.

I have a big old metal bread box that I use to store my canna rhizomes. Although now I've outgrown it and also use heavy plastic buckets with lids, Rubbermaid storage containers with lids, etc. I also suggest strategically placed mousetraps.

I have white siberian iris. Let me know if you want me to save you one.

I'd love the canna. I'll pass on the water iris, but I'll bet Bonnie would jump on them. If it has the word "iris" in it, she loves it. :) White would compliment her purple.

I have just learned that I don't need to lift canna around here. I had no idea and will try not to this next season. If elephant ears continue to survive, I think if I do my normal, 3'' mulch, the cannas should, too .

Mouse traps: Rich caught 23 mice in one afternoon. We ran out of peanut butter and they started eating the trapped ones. Totally pukey. It'll help when we're not under construction anymore. In 10 years when that happens.

Christine, wow, where are you that's a zone 7b? I'm SO jealous!

I've had Red King Humbert make it through the last 2 winters in a fairly protected spot in my own yard, here on the line between zones 6 and 7. I've never had any other cannas make it through a winter outdoors, though.

From my observations around the area, it seems that the red flowered ones are more winter hardy than some of the more exotic varieties.

I DID have a zone 7 giant calla overwinter this year outside. Yippee! With such a late winter and so much wetness, I didn't expect it to make it. It's on a well-drained hill. Maybe next year I'll have enough to bring to the swap. It looks like a speckled elephant ear. Here's a photo (you can buy one if you don't want to wait!):

I live in waterless hell sometimes, but things do seem to winter well -- if the voles don't get them. I'm taking LynnT's suggest and buying wire mesh today to make cages for bulbs. I'm tired of watching foliage wilt before my very eyes.

LynnT -- didn't you get my email about the bucket of Blackberry Lilies sitting next to your bucket of Jacob Klein on the cinder blocks by my pine tree? They're a'waiting you. Hosta Albo Margineta is potted, sitting on the ground in a plastic tray ready to go to the swap. It's not labeled yet, but if you don't have any... It's a nice, medium-sized upright.

Hi, this is the "poobah" (whatever that means). If you have a last minute look on this, consider bringing some stick-um name tags. We will have paper, pens, and tape so you can put your name on your car, but we have none that you can paste on your chest to tell others who your are. If there are as many people as last year, this would be immensely helpful (I'll check with the drugstore, just in case). Gardengranma is getting on in years (and I am not the only one). Remember - call if you are lost 301-421-0284 -- someone will be near the phone to help you.
Tomorrow sounds like just the right day for a swap. If we run out of parking spaces, you can park along the street leading up to our house (the neighbors are great and will not complain).
