I have never heard of scallion sets. I know people will grow onion sets for green onions but those are not the same as scallions which are an allium but unlike onions do not make bulbs and reproduce through division.

If you direct seed in the next week or so you should have scallions by mid May as they should take about 60 days.

I planted onion sets about a week ago and I expect to start pulling them in late May to early June as green onions and they should make bulbs by late June into early July, a good 4 weeks ahead of the onions we do from seed (which we start in January and February indoors under lights and than transplant the seedlings this month and into April if necessary)

I grow green onions and sell them as Scallions. I started this project last fall and it has been one of they easiest thing ever.

In the spring I would guess that it would take 30-40 days or less to get a nice small green onion. The smaller sets make better scallion sized green onions.

I am starting more this weekend for our early markets. In April. I am planning on planting a pipe or more a week all summer.

Thanks for the input. I won't be seeding until April, but with luck maybe I'll have 'em ready by June 1.

Forgot to ask - varieties? Stuttgart, Ebenezer, Evergreen hardy white?

My local supplier of sets, don't give you a variety. I usually plant yellow or red. Both the red and yellow are supposed to have some cancer fighting agents that the white onions do not have, so I've been told.

Evergreen hardy white is a great cultivar-very reliable.

We have been selling scallions from seed in 4 packs for years...I seed them into a 288 plug tray w/ our Vandana seeder. I put 5-7 drops in each cell. Then we transplant the whole group into a cell of the 4 packs.

Usually I use Tokyo long white from Harris.
