I'm not sure that is the best option for getting drainage...the more important thing is to have well drained soil. Top soil and high organic matter mixes should be avoided. I lean towards a mixture of about 15 percent top soil, 35 percent peat moss, 25 percent perlite and 25 percent bark nuggets or bark mulch. However, there are many variations to these mixes and I don't honestly know the best. But the important thing is that it is a loose soil that doesn't store water the way top soil or clay does. I guess course sand mixes can also be used but it is hard to come by in my area.

Stone layers in small pots impede drainage by making a layer of different, coarser texture below the potting mixture. The water does not cross the layer of rocks until the potting mixture above is saturated, at which point it gushes out creating the false impression of enhanced drainage. Fill the pot all the way to the bottom with the potting mixture, just like commercial growers do.

Big wide containers like planter boxes in malls can benefit from a drainage layer because in that case the rocks help drain the water off once it hits the big wide bottom where it might otherwise sit.

UH OH... well I used a tree and shrub soil mixed with organic soil for the JM and the Pixie jm. Will it be okay? I also put crushed stone in the bottom of the larger one. What should I do.. should I replant it or leave it alone?
