Fuzzy leaf maple

Hi,

I was visiting a friends new house for the holiday. He had a maple which seemed to have very "fuzzy" leaves. It was about 15 feet tall, He's concerned because many of the branches are not leafing out that fully and it has a big seem down one side of base and a couple of the branches(I'll try to get pics).

Any idea what the species is with fuzzy leaves?

Seems looking like previous damage to me. Could this be source of infection, cause of poor leafing?

Thanks,

Chuck

Thanks,

Since I'm not near the tree, I'll see if my friend can upload a photo. Maybe it will be enough to confirm it as dummond maple...?

Thanks,
Chuck
