I have a nearly 20 year old silver maple with the same symptoms. Every year it looks worse and worse. There are more seeds than leaves, which are incredibly small. There are more dead branches every year and it begins to turn color in late July instead of Sept. No one has been able to tell me what is wrong with my once stunning shade tree. I have been told root girdling, chlorosis and maple decline, which is a nice word for "we have no clue". We are going to try some iron but I have my doubts if this is the issue since the symptoms of chlorosis dont seem to really apply. I do know that over production of seed can be the tree attempting to propogate in its sorry state. If you find out anything, please let me know and I will do the same.
