Yes. 'Moonrise' has larger leaves and the new growth is bright red.

Thanks rockhaven! So it is bright red throughout the year whereas Autumn Moon is quite yellowish and Aureum is more of a green type? Are there other A.shirasawanum breeds except moonrise and autumn moon? Do you know of a page on the internet where I can see the differences between the types?

The 'Moonrise' leaves are just red when they emerge in the Spring, They later fade to a lime green (as in the picture above). Notice they are kind of crinkled as well. The 'Autumn Moon' leaves emerge more yellow/green and then take on a reddish tint that overlays the yellow/green. That said, I'm not an expert and can only comment on what I've seen with the trees that I have.

Two others that I have had good luck with over the past few years are 'Jordan' which is yellower and can handle more sun and 'Sensu' which is more bronze/greenish and can also handle more sun.

In terms of a good reference, the Vertrees book is a stand-by and I always start with the Buchholz & Buchholz website.

'Aureum' has beautiful chartreuse leaves which burn easily in sun. Provide with ample shade.

'Autumn Moon' and 'Moonrise' are supposed to tolerate more sun and to some extent they do...but they'll still fry in full sun situations. As already stated, 'Moonrise' flushes red which fades to normal green. 'Autumn Moon' is the reverse, the leaves start off green and exposure to sun brings out a nice orangey red hue. Personally, I think 'Moonrise' is not as nice as the other two.

Autumn Moon is my favorite.
Here is a picture of mine taken yesterday. These are the fantastic colors of the leaves in Spring/Early Summer in New England, not fall colors. The color show is repeated in the fall after turning a more greenish color in mid-summer.
