Maybe try searching the forum. Blighting off and dying back of Japanese maples seems to be starting to be right up there with blackspot on roses.

Likly just transplantation shock too much sun too fast or too much water or too much wind...water infrequently as needed DON'T overdo it ..Jm's like it drier than wetter ( not too dry ;>000 )... but most likely just sun shock ...especially if tree was under shade cloth at nursery and you put it in the sun not gradually .. I would bet it will be fine unless the water is the problem that could be root rot and fatal but I doubt it !! ...Now if you had leaf wilt or black bark spotting I would be concerned...leaf tip crisping and whole leaf crisping are so common it is almost a sign of a healthy JM ;>).. when I see this on mine I don't get too concerned ... the wilting blackening etc is usually a death sentence...david

Can maples be treated with a fungicide?

You need to find out what the problem is before looking at sprays. Cooperative Extension may be able to help. Try a Master Gardener clinic or nearest Extension office. Take samples.

In addition to never treating before you have firmly identified a problem, be aware that Japanese maples have delicate foliage that does not respond well to foliar sprays. You will get a phytotoxic reaction to pretty much anything other than plain water.

I'm with David on this one. It sounds very much like it is showing some evidence of transplant shock. Keep an eye on it, keep it well hydrated and if the problem increases, pursue other possibilities. It could also have suffered some root damage/disturbance at planting.
