Maple Hating Squirrel

I thought I had chased the evil squirrel away with dried blood meal and Hot Pepper spray on all of my other flower pots - I thought he'd move on - instead it seems to have been a challenge.

I have accumulated a number of little 1 year grafts that are happily living on my porch. Today I came home and it was mass destruction. My poor little Beni Hime had almost the entire top 2 inches of soil dumped out. I think all of the Maples will live, but I know another showdown with the squirrel will come.

My maples are in a 50-50 mix of Pine Bark and Aquatic Soil (turface) so when the little rodent digs, he makes a huge mess.

Any suggestions for fighting back against this creature? The dried blood works well for other pots but I do not want the maples to get that much Nitrogen. I'm not honestly sure what is in the Hot Pepper spray and am reluctant to spray either my roses or my maples with it.

I'm thinking of getting window screen and cutting a piece to size for each pot then burying it 1/2 an inch or so. Any other ideas or flaws in my screen theory are much appreciated.
