There are Witch Hazels (the native ones, not the japanese ones) growing along the creek out back. The deer have never eaten them, but they've never really eaten anything here even considered deer candy either!

Young witch hazels need protection from rabbits that will gnaw the bark off them, or eat the buds. If a rabbit rings the stem completely it will eat the tubes that bring water up to the leaves. My young 'Arnold Promise' has a staked fence of hardware cloth until it becomes a sizeable plant. An ugly sight but I cannot really see spending another $15
on rabbit food.
Many plants have poisons in them that would make a deer sick, but my theory is that they browse and so never get a toxic dose, just a mix of weak poisons that don't slow them down at all. I also believe a hungry deer will eat anything, rather than have and empty stomach. I believe the toxins in red cedar destroy the bacteria inside the deer that help them process their food. Still, starving deer will eat cedar, and die of malnutrition with a stomach full of cedar twigs and leaves.

Witch hazel are not on my "deer resistant" list, which I have put together from several sources, but I have not tried them.

I have a large Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis) growing right along the path the deer take down my driveway. They've never touched it.
