Canker on my Japanese Maple??

Hi! My husband recently purchased this Japanese Maple from a local nursery & it has what looks like a black scar on the trunk. I am by no means an expert, so can someone please let me know if they think this is canker or maybe something else. I have read that canker can spread to other trees. I def don't want this to happen. If it turns out to be canker, what can I do? Do I kill it??? Or is there some cure for it?? It has not been planted in the ground & is still in the pot. PLEASE HELP! Any info would be greatly appreciated.
