dead bloodgood

In October '04 I transplanted a 2" cal Bloodgood in Northwestern CT from a shady spot north of ashes and white pine, next to a house facing southeast. Summer of '05 it leafed out, though not densely. Shed its leaves normally in fall '05 with new buds formed. In spring '06 it was dead, no leaf swell. Bark at base had separated from trunk with vertical splits above. No sign of disease or rodents, planted professionally - not too deep, good ball. Peonies and perennial geraniums growing at its base are thriving. some green remains in the root of the tree. Any ideas what went wrong?
