Japanese Maple starting

I have two (8' ) Japanese Maples in my beackyard, seldomseen seldom noticed. I would like one in my nearly empty front yard. Is there a way to razor a branch, start it to root then plant it? Or is grafting the only way? Also if i need to graft, what can I use for rootstock (not much here) I have a scion in a jar of water right now to see if it roots ( 2 days - no roots!)
