Japanese maple bark has splits

The top horizontal branches of my red weeping cutleaf maple are spliting in lots of short lttle splits. It looks like possible sunburn to me. I don't want to remove those branches as it would ruin the shape of the tree, which is under 4 feet tall. I did prune to shape earlier this spring and probably removed more than I should have, but I don't think I took off anything right at the top of the tree. Is there anything I should do at this point? Thanks for any advice you may have to share!
