Wintering them might be a problem because you can't sink the pot in the garden without smothering the lower hostas. I tried an unheated garage with some potted hostas one year and no luck- they died. It's a cute idea though.

Sounds interesting, hope it works for you. When I overwinter less hardy plants in my unheated garage I wrap them well with newspaper and place inside a cardboard box and crumple more newspaper around them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Do you have a crawl space you could put the pot in for the winter? I put lots of dahlias and other tender plants in pots in my crawl space.

You could also plant the hostas in the garden for the winter and take divisions to replant in your strawberry pot the next spring.

Do you have window wells? You can put pots in them and cover with leaves. I've never done this, but I know people who have.

Thanks for the responses. I do have an covered egress window well. I don't know what the temp is in the dead of winter but alittle warmer than an unheated garage.

What about digging a fairly shallow trench, perhaps 1/2 to 3/4 the width of the pot, laying the pot down on its side and covering loosely with a foot or so of soil and mulch, then maybe a couple of soft bags of leaves; watering it well before a hard freeze and then uncover in the spring? this is something like what this guy at Gertens told me they do with their PG hydrangeas, only they use wood chips and tarps (if I recall correctly). Anyway, just a thought, might work, might not.
