Cottony Maple Scale

Yuck!

Last year we had a patio put in and it's underneath two silver maples. Well has our luck goes, this year both trees get cottony maple scale. We didn't know what it was at first, thinking the trees were just producing vast amounts of sap, perhaps trying to make up for last years drought.

By July when everything was still covered with stickiness and things started turning Black, I started doing my research.

I had noticed the white scales on the branches, but had no idea what they were. Didn't take long to find out it's cottony maple scale. It's too late in the season now to do anything about it, but early next spring we were advised to treat with dormant oil.

Has anyone here experienced this awful plague with your maples? What did you do and did you get good results?

Thanks for any help offered. We have a new, but sticky, patio we hope to enjoy more next year.
