Corla Bark maple problem-

I have a 9 foot Coral Bark Maple I planted 2 years ago. It is sending out very long "shoots" or limbs. They are so thin that they are drooping almost to the ground like a willow tree. The ones I have seen in nurseries are not like this. Did I over fertilize the tree? Should I trim these long thin limbs back now or wait until February? Any other thoughts? Thanks
