Vine maple colouring early

Hello.

I have a vine maple (acer circinatum) that I planted last fall, and is already now starting to show its fall colors. We had a drought - may be it didn't get enough water. The opposite could be true, too: the lawn was being watered daily and the maple was in the way.

My question is this: is this cause for alarm? will the maple lose its leaves early, and if so, will it eventually die?

Hi,

Maples will sometimes show their fall colors during summer. This is usually due to the heat. The leaves that have colored up will eventually fall to be replaced by new ones. No cause for alarm. Consider it an early birthday present of sorts. A preview of what to expect in the fall when all the leaves turn color.

It's the drought conditions. Here in its native area, where it is planted in all kinds of situations, we see alot of this early turning. Unwatered Acer rubrum - another species that is planted everywhere here, yet is not adapted to our dry summers - are also turning color already.
